Hell may have broken loose in Supernatural land—and on Twitter, where the fan tag luciferiscoming nearly ignited a religious war—but for viewers it’s Heaven on earth. (Ok, maybe the most extreme Samaholics will find something in "Sympathy for the Devil" to bitch about.) Sam is guilty for inadvertently raising Lucifer, Dean is setting his jaw even more than usual trying to deal normally with his brother and the Winchester-hating demon Meg returns for a violent turn.. And don’t forget those damned angels. The fifth season of Supernatural has begun!
It’s early days of the Apocalypse in a world pretty close to ours—replete with swine flu, North Korea going nuclear, earthquakes and tornadoes—and the Winchester brothers, after inexplicably being rescued from Lucifer’s clutches, go looking for their guardian angel Castiel. Although their buddy the reluctant prophet Chuck Shirley tells them that the archangels “smote the crap out of him,” a resurrected Cas (Hmmm…) shows up to save them from Zachariah, the heavenly host who is busy torturing Dean into leading the angel’s charge against the devil, since he is their chosen one. Lots of snarky repartee in that exchange including this one from Zach to Dean: “You simpering wad of insecurity and self-loathing.” And this from Dean: “Life as an angel condom. Real fun. I think I’ll pass.” Bitch fight anyone?
Meanwhile Lucifer is busy convincing his own chosen one—a grieving husband and father named Nick—to let him use his body as his vessel—aka “meat suit.” In an intimate and moving scene, the fallen angel, in the guise of Nick’s murdered wife, tells the widower that if he surrenders, Luce will make an uncaring God pay for His sins. Nick agrees. Liking Mark Pellegrino as the Devil so far.
In the show’s trademark cheeky fashion, there’s plenty of smart ass retorts and meta self-consciousness mixed in with the gloom and gore in the episode. There’s even a wink to Sam/Dean slash fiction, written by an obsessed fan of Chuck’s Supernatural novels who’s so excited to meet the real Sam that she can’t stop touching him. On the other hand, when she sees Dean, it’s pause then “You’re not what I pictured.”
And yes, Meg, played played this time around by Rachel Miner, shows up to rip Sam and Dean new ones—and also plant a kiss on the unwilling Sam. But alas poor Meg, after gloating that “these are the days of merriment and wonder, our Father is among us,” gets smoked. Literally.
Also: Bobby gets taken over by a demon ordered to kill Dean, but through his willpower stabs himself and may never walk again.
And then there’s the gut punch at the episode’s end when Dean tells his bro, “I tried Sammy. I really tried. But I just can’t keep pretending that everything’s all right. It’s not and it’s never going to be. You chose a demon over your own brother.” Breathe, fans. This too shall pass. As Kripke has said numerous times. Supernatural is all about family..
Favorite Dean speech: “Screw the angels and the demon and their crap Apocalypse. If they want to fight a war they can find their own damn planet. This one’s ours and I say they get the hell of it.” Give me a D, give me an E, give me an A and give me an N. That’s telling ’em.
What did you think of Season 5 premiere? Was it good or bad to see Castiel? Good or bad to see Meg? Do you think Mark Pellegrino is a good Lucifer?
